Whether you
employ contract product designers on regular basis or looking
for a contractor for the first time,
approaching a new designer is a big step. You want to know that
you will get honest and friendly advice, a

Step 1. Bring your idea to a form that can be demonstrated to people who may be your potential customers or users of your product. This may be an attractive brochure, a computer graphic model or a crude prototype fit for a short demonstration. This is the stage where you may want to consult a patent lawyer and file a patent. This step typically costs $10,000 - $50,000, mostly in legal and technical fees. Step 2. Pitch your model or prototype to investors and potential users. Feedback from potential users helps you gauge the viability of your idea in the market place. It also helps you modify the product to make it more attractive to your future customers. This is the stage where you collect investment money, government grants, loans and promises to buy. This step typically costs $10,000 - $50,000, mostly in marketing expenses. Step 3. Assemble a team (employees and / or contract professionals) to build a number of working (so-called beta) prototypes of your product. Use the beta units to get feedback from a limited pool of users. This helps you iron out bugs before you invest in mass production. Step 3 is also the time to gather money (sales, investment, loans and promises to buy) for production. This step typically costs $50,000 - $1,000,000 spent on salaries, engineering and technical certification costs, legal fees and marketing expenses. Step 4. You may choose to go to production yourself or sell the rights to a large company. Either way, this is the stage where you reap the fruit of your hard work. For most people, the most serious barrier to success is starting capital. There are many sources of investments capital but, in reality, you should be prepared to finance steps 1, step 2 and parts of step 3 yourself. You may have that money in saving. Otherwise, you may want to find a sponsor. A sponsor can be a wealthy acquaintance or a company that agrees to finance development in return to preferential price or treatment when you go to production. Most of the successful technology ventures I know were spun off larger companies or academic programs, with the bulk of their early expenses paid by the mother organization in return to some form of consideration. Signal Integrity Electronics can create a prototype from concept. Most commonly, we get involves in step 3, where we bring an idea or a crude prototype to beta stage. Our expertise is in electronic hardware, firmware and software. We can help you assemble a wider technical team, to take care of the mechanical and other engineering aspects of your project. We are not experts with the legal, financing and marketing aspects of the product development process. You will find us supportive and sympathetic on whichever subject you wish to discuss but we will always encourage you to consult with experts on non-technical issues. |
I am a seasoned entrepreneur embarking on
a new venture.. Signal Integrity Electronics creates alpha and beta grade prototype from concept. Most commonly, we are asked bring an idea or an initial prototype to the alpha, then beta stage. Our expertise is in electronic hardware, firmware and software. We can help you assemble a wider technical team, to take care of the mechanical and other engineering aspects of your project. As a seasoned entrepreneur you probably know that designing, testing and certifying a prototype takes a lot of expertise and hard work. Typical engineering costs are measured in tens to hundreds of thousands and typical time lines are measured in months to years. It is a normal practice to break this process into stages (say, plan several alpha stages prior to the beta stage). This approach gives the entrepreneur time to raise funds, fine-tune the product and assemble a winning team. Signal Integrity Electronics will be happy to advise you on the technical requirements of your project and help you build a business plan. We can give free general advice and conduct in-depth study into components, certification requirements and the like for a moderate fee. Once the technical vision is well anchored in a business plan we will help you assemble a team and build the prototype. Free Initial Consultation and Estimate When you approach Signal Integrity Electronics, we will ask for details of the projects (and sign an NDA, if required). Based on the details, you will get either an itemized estimate of cost and time to completion. If the details are not sufficient for a responsible estimate, a proposal for a short (usually 1-2 weeks) paid study. With the exception of a paid study or review, this initial process will not cost you anything and carries no obligation on your part. Contract Work At the beginning, we negotiate the contract terms: deliverable items (prototypes, documentation files, etc.), cost and time-line. Once we agree on terms, the contract work will commence. You can expect regular informal communication about the work and timely notification of any issues that may affect the cost and schedule. At the conclusion of a milestone (and / or the contract), you will get all the binary files, written documents, parts and prototypes agreed upon. In a typical contract, we do not own or keep any rights to the work we perform for you. Typical payment terms are periodical, tied to milestones or calendar dates (for example, bi-weekly payments), with out-of-pocket expenses paid either ahead of time or at the time of the expenditure. In Signal Integrity Electronics, we are not experts with the legal, financing and marketing aspects of the product development process. You will find us supportive and sympathetic on whichever subject you wish to discuss but we will always encourage you to consult with experts on non-technical issues. |

My established technology company is seeking contract
help to work on a product development project. Well-defined contract assignments for mature companies is the bread and butter of the contract electronic development business. Signal Integrity Electronics created alpha and beta prototypes from concept or outdated legacy devices documentation. We also do discrete tasks, such as PCB design or a firmware package. We are here to lend you a hand when a deadline looms and you are short of personnel, when the budget does not allow hiring a permanent employee or when we have ready expertise which will take your team some time to build. Signal Integrity Electronics will do its best to accommodate your established work patterns and company culture. In most cases, we can design using you in-house CAD software rather than lock you into our tools. We can write firmware and software for your preferred platform. We will be happy to merge into your team and accommodate your schedule and normal team-coordination arrangements.
